Tens of thousands of civilian employees work on Fort Meade for the Army, NSA, U.S. Cyber Command, DISA and other defense agencies. As federal civilian employees they are covered by the Federal Employees' Compensation Act, not by military medicine and not by Maryland workers' compensation — which surprises many people whose first stop after an on-post injury is the installation clinic. That initial visit is fine, but under FECA you then have the right to choose your own treating physician, and the physician's reports are what OWCP uses to accept the claim.
Fort Meade injuries run the full range: warehouse, motor pool and facilities injuries; slips on the post's sprawling campus; on-duty vehicle accidents on MD-32 and MD-175; and — for the large secure-office workforce — cumulative neck, back and carpal tunnel conditions filed as occupational disease claims on Form CA-2.
